Brasserie keeps it warm and friendly
Just drive down Beach Street after dark and glance in the big windows at Delphine, the chic new bistro a few doors south of International Speedway Boulevard, and you’ll feel the welcome. Walls painted a toasty brick color and hung with dozens of old mirrors, coupled with carpeted floors and an open kitchen to the rear, radiate warmth. Fine Arts Writer Laura Stewart and her friend Nikki Katz found more than decor to their liking during a recent visit to Delphine American Brasserie.
Q. How did the place strike you?
Delphine is exceptionally friendly, from the hostess at the door to the personalized service from servers and frequent visits from the hostess, who makes sure you’re enjoying your dining experience. The menu, while not extensive, is broad enough to include an excellent Italian-inflected dish (pasta carbonara, $16.95), vegetarian delights (ratatouille melt, $8.50), creative salads (luscious warm spinach salad, $9.50) and a number of superb fish dishes, from the Mahi club ($9.95) to Parmesan-crusted rainbow trout ($16.95).
Q. How was the service?
Outstanding — not annoying. The servers never interrupted conversations but constantly checked to see that water glasses were kept full, empty plates were removed, any questions were answered and extra grated cheese or freshly ground black pepper was presented. Our server explained details of several dishes before we made our choices, and was both considerate and entertaining.
Q. What did you eat?
Nikki chose a favorite dish, one she rarely finds at restaurants and one that is rarely prepared to her liking. Her mini-lamb T-bones ($19.95) were served medium rare to rare, with a choice of french fries, mixed greens or grilled vegetables. She chose the salad greens and vegetables, which had a savory grilled flavor and were still slightly crunchy. I went with the pasta carbonara, and found its blend of garlic, bacon, shallots, fresh green peas and Parmesan cheese perfect. Served over the pasta was grilled chicken, a delicious counterpoint.
Q. How was it?
Good enough that ordering was difficult — this was my third visit, and I already had found favorites. One was the warm spinach salad and another was the French onion soup ($5.50); knowing how good they were made it hard to try something new. But the pasta carbonara quickly became a new favorite, as did the grilled vegetables I had as a side dish.
Q. Did you have dessert?
Dinner was satisfying, but we managed to save room for dessert. I had tried the warm doughnut pudding ($6.95) before, and knew that we needed it and coffee before going to a concert. The French press coffee was excellent, served in mugs, and the doughnut pudding, served with delicious creme anglaise, vanilla ice cream and raspberries with a big sliced strawberry, was to die for.
Q. What was your tab?
It came to $49.85 without tip.
Q. Will you go back?
I already have, with other friends.
